Children Becoming Catholic

Whether your family is just entering the Church or returning to the practice of the Catholic faith, all are welcome to inquire about sacramental preparation through the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Program or the RCIC Program for their children at St. Luke.

St. Luke School Children

Note that children attending St. Luke School may be registered for RCIC in grade 3 or above. The presumption is that they attended our Catholic school the previous year.

Public and non-Catholic Private School Children

Children in public and non-Catholic private schools should be registered for SMRE (Sunday Morning Religious Education) classes for one year before entering the RCIC Program.

What is the schedule? Classes meet on Sunday mornings from 10:45 to 11:50 a.m. in St. Luke School. RCIC classes are scheduled at the same time as SMRE (Sunday Morning Religious Education. The 2021-2022 SMRE Calendar will be updated soon.

What ages participate? RCIC is a program for children between the ages of 8 or above who have not been baptized or who are baptized in another Christian denomination. It is also for older children who are baptized in the Catholic faith but were never prepared for Reconciliation, Eucharist or Confirmation.

What is covered? The program provides a comprehensive review of the essentials and key teachings of the Catholic faith.

When do they receive the sacraments? All students who are ready will receive the sacraments at the Easter Vigil the Saturday night before Easter Sunday. Those who have already been baptized either Catholic or in another Christian denomination (Candidates) enter the Catholic Church by making a profession of Faith and receiving the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. The sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession/Penance) is celebrated before Easter. Unbaptized children (Catechumens) celebrate Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. During the Easter Season, they go to confession for the first time.

How do I enroll? Parents may register their children by registering online and contacting Sister Diane, Director of Religious Education at 259-4373 ext. 256. Registration is complete after the appointment. The cost of the program is $85. for public school children and $45. for children enrolled at St. Luke School. Click here to register online. If the child to be registered for RCIC is baptized, please provide a copy of the baptismal certificate.
