A Message From Finance Council

An Important Message from Your Finance Council

In every Sunday Bulletin we show how Sunday collections compare to our budget. You may recall that in the fall we started very favorably, achieving our Sunday collections budget.  However, in November and continuing through to the month of January, our Sunday collections have been substantially below budget, and only slightly above last year.  If this trend continues, we will have some very difficult choices, both for this year and for planning future years.

Finance Council Message

St. Luke has two primary operating expenses—payroll and maintaining our aging facilities.   We strive to compensate our teachers and staff fairly and to keep our buildings and grounds safe, secure, and running smoothly as a place to worship, learn, and enjoy fellowship.  We have very limited flexibility for managing a large collections deficit.

From time to time, we hear comments from our fellow parishioners about our finances.  One comment is that we must be doing well to have the resources to build the Portico and add new flooring in the Church.  What you may not realize is that those projects are funded by donor restricted contributions that, by law, may only be used for the purpose designated by the donor.  Restricted contributions are very much appreciated and have been essential in helping us fund virtually all of our recent capital projects. However, we may not use those funds for normal operations. When fundraisers such as Trivia and Fall Fest are designated to fund capital projects, they are not available for operations.  For the last several years we have not been able to budget funds for any capital needs and have had to rely on restricted donations and fundraisers.

We are prayerful that the increase that we experienced last fall will resume and that the winter shortfall we have experienced can be offset.  Please consider a generous increase in your recurring Sunday giving of one third more than your current giving. The best way to do so is to initiate or increase recurring electronic contributions. You can do this by selecting “Recurring” and the fund “Church Donation.” You can start your electronic contributions by clicking here.
