St. Luke Novena
October 9-17
Feast Day – Oct. 18

Nine days with St. Luke the Evangelist — the Greek physician and companion of Paul who never met the Lord but gathered his Gospel from Mary herself, gave us the Magnificat, the Good Samaritan, and the road to Emmaus, and continued the story in the Acts of the Apostles — patron of doctors, surgeons, and artists who paint icons.

Saint Luke the Evangelist, pray for us!

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

ABOUT LUKE THE EVANGELIST

FEAST: OCTOBER 18

Luke the Evangelist was a physician, companion of Saint Paul, and the author of both the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles — together comprising over a quarter of the New Testament. Born in Antioch, Syria, Luke was a Gentile convert to Christianity and the only non-Jewish author of the New Testament. His Gospel is noted for its literary elegance, its emphasis on Jesus' compassion for the poor, women, and outcasts, and its unique parables including the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son. The Acts of the Apostles, his second work, chronicles the early Church from the Ascension through Paul's imprisonment in Rome. Tradition holds that Luke was also a painter, and several icons of the Blessed Virgin Mary are attributed to him. He traveled extensively with Paul on his missionary journeys, as evidenced by the 'we' passages in Acts. Luke is believed to have died peacefully in Greece at age 84. He is the patron saint of physicians, surgeons, artists, and painters. His feast day is celebrated on October 18.
