Belief, Faith, and the Environment

Leaders of nearly every world religion now recognize the moral and religious implications of unchecked human contributions to the accelerating pace at which the climate of our planet is changing. Faith leaders, congregations, and others concerned with the moral consequences of global climate change are being urged to reclaim and act upon their environmental stewardship responsibilities.

Eighty-six Christian leaders, three from Indiana, have decided to back a major initiative to address global warming, saying that "millions of people could die in this century because of climate change, most of them our poorest global neighbors."

At the international and national levels, people of faith are facing this challenge. Locally, the Interfaith Alliance Indianapolis (IAI) is focussing on this issue.

IAI is a coalition of Baha'i, Buddhist, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Protestant, and Unitarian Universalist congregations and individuals, dedicated to promoting a better understanding among our peoples and religious traditions. St. Luke Catholic Church is one of nearly 50 such congregations that are supporting members of IAI.
