H.R. 5111 Correcting Legislation
Thursday,June, 17 ,2010 Filed in: Pro-Life
The health care reform bill, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) (H.R. 3590), was signed into law on March 23, 2010. While long supporting health care reform, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has criticized the final law as profoundly flawed in its treatment of abortion, conscience rights, and fairness to immigrants.
This effort targets the 240 members of Congress that supported the Stupak amendment last November. Currently 100 Representatives have signed as co-sponsors, including Mike Pence; this action asks the others to be co-sponsors, Representatives Burton, Buyer, Donnelly, Ellsworth and Hill who supported the Stupak amendment. If one of these congressmen are your representative, please contact them and ask them to be a co-sponsor of HR 5111.
Correcting Legislation
On April 22, Rep. Joseph Pitts (R-PA) introduced legislation (H.R. 5111) to remedy PPACA's serious problems on abortion. The bill would prevent PPACA from requiring abortion coverage or paying for abortion. It also would prevent the government from acting under the law to discriminate against health care entities that do not provide, pay for, provide coverage of, or refer for abortion. The bill takes special care to modify PPACA's "Special Rules" section 1303 to ensure that it conforms "to long-standing federal policy" on abortion.
In a May 20 letter to Congress, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Chairman of the bishops' Committee on Pro-Life Activities, urged Members to support and co-sponsor H.R. 5111. This letter provides important background. See: www.usccb.org/comm/archives/2010/10-103.shtml.
