AIM Needs Assistance
Tuesday,July, 24 ,2007 Filed in: Justice Issues
The Aftercare for Indiana through Mentoring (AIM) is a statewide nonprofit organization serving youth offenders transitioning from corrections to the community. Each week 3 to 8 juveniles are released to participate in the AIM and Marion County Juvenile Court Community Transition Program (CTP). There is a great need for positive adult role models to serve as mentors for youth, ages 13-18.
Mentors can choose to start working with a youth incarcerated at one of the local correctional facilities and assist them with their transition back into Marion County. We also have youth that are currently in the community in need of mentors. Mentors volunteer to meet with a youth weekly to provide support, guidance, friendship, talk or participate in activities that both are interested in. It only takes 2 hours a week to make a huge difference in the life of a youth!
Dr. G. Roger Jarjoura, professor of Criminal and Juvenile Justice at Indiana University and Executive Director of AIM, will be providing mentor training classes, for adults interested in mentoring youth involved in the AIM/Juvenile Court CTP program. The training will be held at the AIM support center located at 3190 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, Indiana. There are several sessions to choose from:
Session 1: Tuesday, July 31st and August 7 th
Session 2: Wednesday, August 1 or August 8th
Session 3: Thursday, August 2 or August 9th
Session 4: Saturday, August 4 at noon to 6:00 p.m.
(volunteers choose to attend one of the two evening sessions or the Saturday session).
If groups of 10 or more would like to participate in mentoring, arrangements can be made to hold the training at the host site. The staff would also be willing to come and speak to your members about mentoring opportunities.
If anyone is interested in signing up for one of the sessions or would like more information, call 371-0988 or email jhelferi@gmail.com . For additional information about our program, they can also visit our website at http://aim.spea.iupui.edu .
