Vacation Over for Congress

On Tuesday, June 5, senators will be back to work and will again consider S.1348, The Secure Borders, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Reform Act of 2007.
Both the Justice for Immigrants Campaign and the Catholic Charities “Justice for Newcomers” Call for Immigration Reform urge a final push for a just and fair comprehensive immigration reform.  What is on the table is not a perfect bill, but we want the best possible bill.  We are urged to ask Senators to support amendments which strengthen family unity and to oppose amendments that limit the number of persons eligible for the Z visa legalization process.   Specific amendments can be found on the JFI website: www.justiceforimmigrants.org/action.html.  In summary: SUPPORT: Menendez-Hagel (1194); Clinton-Hagel (1183); Obama-Menendez (1202); Dodd-Menendez (1199); Kerry; Lieberman (1191). OPPOSE: Cornyn (1184 and 1250); Grassley (1166); Sessions (1234 and 1235); Ensign (expected amendment to deny SS payments to Z visa holders based on earnings made while out of status); Inhofe (makes English the official language of the U.S.)
