Heated Immigration Debate This Week
Tuesday,May, 22 ,2007 Filed in: Immigration
As the debate in the Senate heats up, we are reminded to pray and support improvements to S.1348, The Secure Borders, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Reform Act of 2007.
While acknowledging the unsatisfactory elements of the compromise immigration proposal which will be considered on the Senate floor this week, the Justice for Immigrants Campaign urges work for improvement rather than opposition to the bill. Efforts will be made to improve the following: Title IV-Temporary Worker Program: Message: provide a path to citizenship and allow family members to accompany the worker; Title V-Family Reunification: Message: oppose eliminating several categories of family preference system and replacing it with a point system; Title VI-Legalization Program: Message: we support legalization of undocumented persons in the Z visa program but want it to allow immediate family members to join the visa holder immediately.
Today, May 22, Bishop Thomas Wenski, Orlando, Florida, will give testimony before the House Subcmte on Immigration. When his testimony is on a USCCB link I'll send it.
